“He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him safe and sound.’ He was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and entreated him.” Luke 15:27-28
When a person turns to God, there will be joy in heaven. There will also be joy here on earth, both for the one who is saved and among other believers. But, unfortunately, there are people who do not get happy when people’s lives are restored. It may sound strange, but it’s sadly true.
Salvation, grace and forgiveness from God are given for free. It is possible because of Jesus’ death and resurrection for every human being. Now every human being can receive God’s love and grace by believing in Jesus. God’s righteousness is given as a gift.
A self-righteous man, on the other hand, holds fast to laws, rules, and merit. There is nothing wrong with wanting to live right, it is very good. But we can never be reconciled to God in that way. It happens only by grace, by believing in Jesus. And then a right life comes as a result.
In Luke 15, the son who lived in immorality and sin finally came home to the father’s house again. There was great joy in the father’s heart and the son was restored. There was a party in the house. But, the other son who stayed at home all the time and lived flawlessly became angry. It turns out that he did not know his father’s heart, but tried to earn love and confirmation. It made his own heart cold towards himself and others, for he himself was not secure in the love of his father.
Self-righteous people are disturbed by the gospel. They think the gospel is too simple. But do not let that bother you, either from believing in and preaching the gospel. It is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. Both the self-righteous and the conscious sinner, can and need to put all their trust in Jesus and be reconciled to God. Then there will be great joy, both in heaven and on earth.
God bless you.
