“When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Mark 2:17
Sometimes repentance is preached incorrectly. Much like telling someone to “Free yourself first so that Jesus can then free you” or like telling someone to “Cut your hair yourself before you go to the hairdresser”. It’s sick.
Repentance is about coming to Jesus just as you are, not trying to be perfect first. Believe that Jesus wants and can help. Jesus said that “… whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” John 8:34 People are stuck, both in the guilt of sin and its power. That is why Jesus wants you to come to Him.
Coming to Jesus is done by putting your faith in Him. Then He can begin His work, to reconcile one to God, break the power of sin and take one’s hand and help one live as a Christian. Jesus is professional in doing all this.
Luke 15 speaks of the prodigal son. He came to his senses and decided to put faith in his father’s goodness. He went home and the father of course received him and exceeded his son’s expectations.
When a person decides to put his faith in Jesus, it is an expression of repentance. Then Jesus does His work and the result is wonderful. It may not be that a person’s behavior becomes perfect overnight. But in the person’s heart, a transformation has taken place and it will really become evident.
Many times it is actually so that we need to repent from the “Can yourself” attitude. Because that attitude means that we do not receive help from Jesus. We do not deserve God’s grace, but we can get it anyway. That is grace, and one receives by believing. Jesus redeems us both from the power of sin and from our self-sufficiency.
So – Put your faith in Jesus, and He will help you.
God bless you.
