“I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.” Rom. 7:9
The letter to the Romans speaks of this with law and grace. The Bible is divided into two parts, the Old and the New, testament. They speak of two completely different covenants that work in completely different ways. The verse above talks about how the commandment / law, revives sin.
Preaching “the law, we must, we really need, get it together”, has the opposite effect. The law stirs up sin. It will be a revival of sin. Of course we sometimes need a push in the right direction, but the emphasis should be on Jesus and what He has done through His death and resurrection and what He wants to do through us. The emphasis should not be on our willpower.
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Gal. 2:20
When we believe in Jesus, then He lives in us. When we preach Jesus as the solution to our inadequacy and weakness, then faith is activated. And when we live daily in faith in Jesus, in all areas of life, then the life from Jesus also flows out through our lives. Jesus in us “awakens to life”, it becomes a revival that smells of Jesus.
So let’s not point out all the shortcomings but point to the solution – Jesus. Then faith will come and then Jesus can begin to work. We want to live in such a revival. By grace through faith.
God bless you.
