The absence of power in the law
God’s law in the Old Testament reveals God’s standard.
“for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.” Rom. 3:20
The law shows God’s standard, but it can never give us the power to fulfill it. Focusing on the law leads to dejection, or pride (when you think you have managed to keep it pretty good for a while).
“But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets. This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction.” Rom. 3:21-22
When we put our faith / trust in Jesus and what He did for us on the cross and through His resurrection, we are counted as righteous before God. A solution without the law but with Jesus instead. Jesus has fulfilled the law in our place.
How can you live as a Christian?
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace.” Rom. 6:14
There is wonderful grace from God that helps us live the Christian life. We see the road in the New Testament and grace helps us walk that road. The law only says “do” and “do not” while grace makes us even do more than the law requires.
But when I am tempted then?
“For we do not have a High Priest (Jesus) who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was in every sense tempted like we are, yet without sin. Let us then come with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebr. 4:15-16
First of all, it is not a sin to be tempted but it is sin if you fall for the temptation. Of course, you do not need to expose yourself to unnecessary temptations. But when facing temptation go to Jesus. He knows how it feels and He has promised to help. Come boldly to Jesus.
A victorious life
“For if by one man’s trespass death reigned through him, then how much more will those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” Rom. 5:17
Abundant grace and the gift of righteousness are received through faith, freely and for nothing. When that is done, things happen and all the glory goes to Jesus. When we cooperate with God we find that “For My (Jesus’) yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matt. 11:30
God bless you.
